Kolkata the Genesis of Modern Education

Kolkata has played a pioneering role in the development of modern education in India. People like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, David Hare, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Shashi Bhusan Chatterjee, and William Carey were prominent figures in setting up modern schools and colleges in the city. They propagated their beliefs on infusing western education with Indian traditional education to set the groundwork for the modern education that we know today.

Science City

Developed by the National Council of Science Museums, it is one of the largest and finest in the world, presenting science and technology in a stimulating and engaging environment that is truly educational and enjoyable for the people of all ages.

National Library

It is India's largest library by volume and public record. The National Library is under Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The library is designated to collect, disseminate and preserve printed material produced within India. With a collection in excess of 2.5 million books and records, it is the largest in the country.

Indian Museum

Indian Museum is the earliest and the largest multipurpose Museum not only in the Indian subcontinent but also in the Asia-Pacific region of the world. Many rare and unique specimens, both Indian and trans-Indian, relating to humanities and natural sciences, are preserved and displayed in the galleries of the museum. 

M. P. Birla Planaterium

It is the oldest and largest planetarium in Asia and the second largest in the world after Japan's Nagoya City Science Museum. It provides a virtual tour of the night sky while holding cosmic shows on a specially perforated hemispherical aluminium inner dome. There are regular one hour shows on wonders of the universe and on facts about the galaxies held at the planetarium through the course of the day in three major languages, Hindi, English and Bengali. The planetarium is that it has been conducting free evening courses in astronomy which has become quite famous among people from all walks of life. The course is a 10-month course conducted on a weekly basis.
