Jadavpur University was originated in the anti-colonial National Council of Education, Bengal (1906) to “achieve self-reliance through the empowerment of youth by imparting the best of global knowledge, technical education, and awareness of social, cultural, political, economic realities of the state, the nation and the world” the university. As stated in the university website itself.
The above statement is quite clearly the environment there, although its is widely recognized around the world but those living in Kolkata especially in the southern neighborhood are familiar with social and the political awakening present among the youths of the university.
As you enter the gates of the university unlike other colleges there are innumerable posters and banners of socio-political posters and awareness of their stance on them, number of students working together on creating them, it also depicts how socially aware and active members of the society they are unlike many young minds, studying there or being a part of that institution would not only learn off the books but also learn the straight reality of life
What may woo many and may not for few is how open they are about their own values and ideologies many of those being communist since past, sensing the environment there it justifies the degree of activism the youth have what may have not been born into many of today’s youths, some may also find close resemblance of the university with JNU in Delhi.
JU Students Unions is an integral student body It is, functioning faculty wise, and is the most important student body on the campus.
Recently the Left Outfitted-Democratic Students Federation (DSF), We the Independent (WTI) and Students' Federation of India (SFI) had swept the students' union elections in Jadavpur University where the elections were held after a gap of three years.
